This is a tutorial on setting up your very first WordPress blog. But before we begin let me just bring you up to speed with blogging and WordPress, in case they both sound foreign to your ears.
In case you did not know, blogging is quite popular these days… and the reasons why people blog are just as countless as there are bloggers. But let me give you a little peak on why people blog.
First of all, for those just like me who actually just started blogging about a couple of years ago, a blog was just simply… a Web Log; similar to a diary or journal, however viewed by a worldwide audience. Blogging signaled the beginning of personal publishing. Anybody with a PC, an internet connection, and an opinion about something or with something to say no matter how trivial, now could get published and read by a huge audience.
Since blogging gained popularity, more bloggers meant, more blog sites, and a greater interest in audiences about blogs… and thus the opportunity for advertising. Countless blogs today are used as cash cows for contextual advertising, where the owner of the blog gets paid to show ads. Ever heard of the word blog farms? Anyways, we aren’t going there today, so lets continue.
One such successful blog platform or program is WordPress, a free and open source software that I should say, without bias, is probably the most popular blogging platform today. Aside from being FREE, WordPress is developed and constantly improved by the very people that use them.
Today WordPress isn’t just blogger-ware, it is one of the most efficient content management systems today and very easy to use too. Its applications are countless… whether for blog sites; websites like corporate sites, merchant and e-commerce sites; personal online portfolios or resumes, and a lot more.
This site (mywebsnack.com) IS a WordPress powered site, so if you like what you see, you gotta give a hand for the people responsible for the constant development of WordPress. If you would like more information on WordPress simply drop by www.wordpress.com or www.wordpress.org.
So your are now on your way to discovering how to set up your WordPress blog. But wait a second… before I forget, there are actually two choices here as far as hosting is concerned, you can create your own site by getting a web hosting service and host your blog there, or if you are a newbie and would like to first get better at it, you can simply create your account on wordpress.com and have your blog hosted there.
There are certain advantages and disadvantaged of self hosting (your own site) and free hosting (like on Wordpress or Blogger, etc), but that is another topic we will get into later.
For now, let us get you set up with a free blog account on WordPress.com.
